Taking your cat to the vet can be a stressful experience for both you and your kitty. Cats are creatures of habit and also incredibly territorial. This means, when they have to travel out of their familiar territory, it often creates a state of stress. . Stress can affect their health and behavior, making vet visits more difficult and also creates a state of stress while traveling in the car. Fortunately, there are practical steps you can take to make the journey smoother and less stressful for your cat.

Prepare Your Cat’s Carrier in Advance

A familiar and comfortable carrier helps your cat feel safe during travel. Ensure the carrier is an adequate size they dont need to feel squished inside of it. I am also a big fan of carriers that have an opening at the top and at the front, and can have the lid come off all together, as it creates different options for your cat to come out of the clinic that they may feel more safe with. Start by leaving the carrier out at home with the door open, on days where there will be no travel occuring so your cat can explore it freely. Place soft bedding and a favorite blanket or toy inside to create a cozy space. Spraying the carrier with a synthetic feline pheromone spray such as Feliway can also help calm your cat, and you can add treats in the space sporadically so they enjoy going and looking in there.

Keep the Carrier Covered During Travel

Covering the carrier with a light blanket or towel during the car ride reduces visual stimuli that might frighten your cat. This creates a dark, quiet environment that helps your cat relax. Make sure the cover allows for airflow and does not overheat the carrier. Avoid loud music or sudden noises in the car, and drive smoothly to minimize jolts. You may also wish to spray the towel with Feliway in advance.

Use Calming Techniques Before and During the Trip

Before leaving, spend some quiet time petting or playing gently with your cat to reduce anxiety. If your cat is likely to experience excessive stress from travel and the visit, it is important to communicate this with your vet as their are medications that can be dispensed to help your pet enjoy their trip more. During the trip, speak softly to your cat to reassure them. Avoid opening the carrier in unfamiliar places to prevent escape or increased stress.

Bring Familiar Items to the Vet

Taking your cat’s favorite blanket, toy, or even a piece of your clothing with your scent can provide comfort in the unfamiliar vet environment. These familiar smells help your cat feel more secure and less anxious during the examination. You can also bring their favourite treats with them - although we do always have a good stash of tube treats that cats love!

Reward Your Cat After the Visit

After the vet visit, reward your cat with treats, playtime, or extra affection. This positive reinforcement helps your cat associate vet visits with good experiences. Over time, this can reduce fear and make future trips easier. Also remember that if travelling to the vet is just too much, talk to us about in home consultations! This can often make your cat the happiest, which is a much more enjoyable experience for them, you and us too!
